Dr. Ellen Hagopian, MD
Ellen J. Hagopian, MD, FACS is a board-certified General Surgeon specializing in
liver, pancreas, biliary tract, gallbladder, and upper gastrointestinal tract surgery.
Fellowship-trained in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery (HPB), her clinical practice is focused in
benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. She is further trained in
laparoscopy and has a particular interest in offering a minimally invasive surgical approach.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Hagopian is an accomplished educator and has
been a leader in surgical ultrasound training for HPB Surgeons and Fellows. Her recently published
book, Abdominal Ultrasound for Surgeons, has been widely received by the surgical
community. Furthermore, Dr. Hagopian is an active member of several prestigious surgical societies,
including the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, American College of Surgeons, the
Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract in addition to serving on professional committees for
these societies. Her research interests span both benign and malignant diseases of the liver, bile
ducts, and pancreas in addition to ultrasound education and multidisciplinary cancer care.
Dr. Hagopian has been honored with several awards including the Blakemore Award for
Excellence in Surgical Research and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. In 2012,
Dr. Hagopian became the first female American Surgeon to be inducted into les Compagnons Hépatobiliaires,
which is the International Hepatobiliary Fellowship Society of Professor Henri Bismuth, an
internationally recognized pioneer in Hepatobiliary Surgery.
Dr. Hagopian‘s philosophy is that of an individualized approach to each
patient, and she values the patient as an active participant in his/her medical care. Reflecting
this, she is a recipient of the Patients‘ Choice Award in 2013 and the Patients‘ Choice
Compassionate Doctor Award in 2014.
